There should be a category: "Background Check" in the Android developer options. You can pretty finely tune or alter the automatically set priorities and permissions for background activity there.

I don't know exactly what the option is called but since Android 8 there is at least a toggle there per app. Later versions have lots more settings.

That tracks. Active vocabulary means the set of words that someone knows well enough to actually use in their speech or writing.

That's always going to be smaller than the set of words for which a person can choose the correct definition out of four options.

You are almost always going to find people with above average reading and writing skills on an online forum - especially one with such "curated" audience and spartan UI.

Probably a cache thing. Win11 precaches a lot of stuff if you hover over it or have excess RAM. It's not as smart as SuperFetch and ReadyBoost (with an HDD) was but it's still doing similar things.

How big is the calculator app on Windows 11 that you need to cache it in RAM? On macOS, the calculator app is 6 MB. And that's containing both x64 and ARM code. How long does it take a modern SSD (6 GB/s?) to read that?

If it's the same as on Win10 it's a UWP App that needs a ton of dependencies like .net, WinUI2/XAML.

Reminds me of the early days of MacOS X when the Calculator app was written in Java as a demo of how fantastic and native their Java integration with Cocoa bindings was. This of course made it horribly slow to launch since initializing the JVM back then was a massive chore.

You shouldn't need to cache a calculator app to make it load quickly - it opened instantly on a machine running Windows 3.0 with 2MB RAM.

Microsoft has AppLocker (since Win7, I think). If you give it a curated whitelist it's actually quite alright and manages well via GPO. (until you manage to lock yourself out ;) Much less overhead than any 3rd party tool that hooks the kernel.

Google kicked it from their store because it still supports older Androids but it still works just fine on the latest versions. It's on F-Droid.

I don't use them, but that is surprising! I would program one of my theoretical phone's physical side buttons to handle PgDn/PgUp [†] – similar to my old Kindle's layout. Do phones still have side volume buttons (e.g.)?

Still on X11. OBS just works.

I've been using OBS on wayland, they got captures working really well a few years ago.

But for VR stuff I've been going back to X11, and I was just last night trying to finish a screen capture program on wayland (w/ kde plasma) and idk I just have to do repeated screenshots ana analyze those > horrible fps, but at least I think I got that working finally after many attempts last year.

Gaming is not really an issue now with DEs that help ppl disable compositions and wine/proton.
