Man, I just do not care to see people’s LLM conversations. Those are not the artifacts. The changes are. It’s like attaching your slack convo with your teammate as a “pr”

This is awesome! More of this in YC and less Flock's.

I don’t care about benchmarks, no way we can distill the breadth of software engineering into a number.

So, folks that have actually used this already, what’s it actually like?

100% agree with this. Want my browser search history too so you can see my thought process?

This is terrible. I have no desire to read your Claude conversation. I don’t even want to read mine if I do use Claude.

The code is the artifact. There’s no value in trying to make the noisy, verbose conversation one. It’ll likely be dead in future years anyway.

I disagree with this. The code alone is not the artifact. How you came to the decision to write the code in a certain way is certainly an important artifact of the development process. Otherwise how would your coworkers know whether or not a particular piece of logic is still relevant?

> How you came to the decision to write the code in a certain way is certainly an important artifact of the development process. Otherwise how would your coworkers know whether or not a particular piece of logic is still relevant

Not really. Why is always more important than how. Even what is more important. Relevancy of a particular block of code is in the specs and some technical aspecs of computing/library/platform, not in the thought process of the developer.

By commenting your code?

Ok, but folks aren't even writing their own code, you think they'll go back and comment generated code? They often don't even look at the implementation that closely.

Also, while commenting is good, commit messages can stick around longer.

How did you before LLMs 3 years ago?

Same way I do now, I write what prompted the change in the commit message.

Fwiw i don't like a session link in the commit message, because of link rot reasons.

I agree and disagree. It all comes down to how much a human was involved with the code.

If the code is artisan to any degree (authored, edited, reviewed, etc.), it's a bit ridiculous.

It does makes sense to me if the human driver was hands-off the code because the conversation becomes the artifact.

I'm older, and have very mixed feelings about the latter case but it seems inevitable that engineers will be working at a higher level where conversational governance becomes important. We'll stop this charade of hiding AI contributions behind human identities. (Note: I don't think conversation IDs are what we need but it's a step down this path.)

I will shamelessly plug https://pitstop.app. I've been working on this for years and I work on/race cars regularly.

I wouldn't fully trust LLMs with this :p BUT this project is still really freaking sweet.

Very cool! Working on a product for in-care use as well, complementary to this. Would love to talk shop!

Yes, I'd love to! How? haha I'm robdel12 on pretty much everything (twitter, github, threads). Personal site w/email link https://robertdelu.ca/ I'd rather not put my email out here :p

Any/all work!

I always will think of how everyone laughed at Bernie Sanders' reply in ~2016 to "What is the greatest threat to national security" and he replied "Climate change".

It's going to get ugly when large swaths of the human population struggles to get food & clean water.

Last night I had insomnia due to stress, and I was compulsively scrolling social media. The comments section of most videos just made me realize how actually fucked we are.

It might just be a context thing and people are on average smarter than what the comment section makes out but yeah, wasn't filling me with confidence what I saw.

Quitting social media is probably one of the best things you could do to bring stress levels back to normal!

It was mostly Youtube but yes, it's social media, I just couldn't imagine quitting YT!

Poolside.ai as well

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDBNVO7K0kA this is a really good little episode from PBS

This reeks of Vern Raburn and Eclipse Aviation all over again, haha. That failed terribly. SV’s ego is pretty funny sometimes. Eclipse even tried to develop their own avionics.

tell me more? I used to live in Albuquerque and always wondered what happened.

https://www.anthropic.com/news/donation-public-first-action

Probably because anthropic is pouring $40 million dollars into a political pact to regulate models. And they have not been quiet about wanting to ban/regulate OSS models either.

I have no idea why HN still treats them like ~their~ they are the ethical good guy.

Edit: I can’t English. At least we know this came from my dumb swishy brain

> I have no idea why HN still treats them like their the ethical good guy.

I don't know that HN usually does. But they did buy a decent amount of publicity by (initially) telling the US government no in using the models for war.

They never did that. They said all they required was a human in the loop for kill decisions. No autonomous kill drones.

Human in the loop is infeasible in comms denied areas which is what we have in Ukraine/Russia right now.

It's why Ukraine and Russia are now using fully autonomous drones. That's the only real solution to jamming.

What does that have to do with LLMs hosted by Anthropic. They didn't say the Dept of War couldn't make kill bots. They said no using Claude to make kill decisions. A quadcopter drone running on a Raspberry Pi isn't running an Anthropic model locally.

anthropic's models would also be useless in a jammed environment though

and the only way to use them would be to blow up A100s

Not true, fibre controlled drones are actually pretty important out there right now: https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/fiber-opt...

Not viable for long range strikes.

No, they are using long optical cables attached to drones. The battlefield looks like a giant spider web afterwards.

Fiber optic drones were last year's weapon of choice, this year it is drones with autonomous terminal phase. This happened because the AI data center build-out increased demand for fiber optics, driving up the price to less affordable levels. Autonomous terminal phase is also more effective; ~80% mission success compared to ~30% for fiber optic drone.

Are they still doing that? I saw that months ago

I genuinely can't tell if you're joking, though I'd like to believe you are...

Fiber optic drones are real but the fully autonomous drones others are describing are also real (but less publicized due to the bad PR around killbots)

yes, what paragrons of virtue who lie about all their financials.

Is it still lying if they just lost track of where all the debt is hidden and stopped caring about those little things? They're seriously like 2 months out from achieving AGI and making more money than god.

They did something Sam wouldn't do at the very least.

Anthropic gained momentum in terms of public opinion, when they launched the no ads campaign and then after not supporting the use of AI without supervision in the military. And now it seems it has been lost after incidents like (people getting incorrect bills) their handling of fable etc

Personally, I never bought the good-guys act. But judging from the HN pulse, it seems to me that the decisive moment when Anthropic lost its halo is when it decided to start silently sabotaging users working on LLM research that might compete with Anthropic. It was so blatantly monopolistic and abusive that it seemed to be mask-off moment for many.

There are plenty of people (myself included) who are critical of Anthropic. Sentiment isn't universal amongst a crowd, it might just feel that way due to the way comments are surfaced on HN once posts reach the front page.

They spend $40mil for lobbying, I'm sure they can also spare some millions to this place (and other places like reddit). They all do.

Let's cynically encourage the abuse of the democratic process.

And what else, forbid running workloads outside of US so you can’t offshore workloads? What’s the rationale behind policies that can be detrimental only to US companies?

To maximize personal influence and wealth, of course. These days, many with power don't seem to care much about uplifting society so long as they get theirs.

Hopefully Anthropic eats crow here, lest their wish is fulfilled that we all become slaves to the anointed few who work there. Never getting another dollar from me after pulling these stunts.

> I have no idea why HN still treats them like ~their~ they are the ethical good guy.

s/good/least bad/

Which company would you put higher?

*squishy

These AI CEOs are psychopaths, they will do anything to get big bucks from defense contracts. There is recent interview with Dario where he said Iran school bombings do not even violate their redlines[1]. Full interview [2] shows that he think like Trump (we are the superior nation)

Don't worry, kimi k3 will be open in a few days and anyone can bomb all the schools they want.
