I wouldn't trust Joel Spolsky's code expertise -- just look at Excel internals! Nevertheless, Stack Overflow is super cool. But that tells nothing about its architectural quality.

Wow the article map measures contamination in "cm"? I never knew contamination is measured in centimeters, what a discovery!

You cannot reverse bitcoin transaction. It either happened or not, determined by the broadcasted block chain.

It's a Coinbase transaction and not a Bitcoin transaction that's at issue.

It looks like Coinbase has a problem managing their float of Bitcoins and/or serious risk management problems.

There was a story yesterday about someone wiring over tens of thousands of dollars and not hearing back for 1-2 weeks.

My theory is that Coinbase are performing some kind of proprietary trading and have burnt themselves badly, and to recover losses, they are front-running customers and delaying trade settlement.

Billionaire title doesn't make scientific claims any more true. Tom Cruise may be billionaire too, but claims to believe in some crap, for whatever reasons.

Just to make my point clear, I'm not against J. Simons. I'm against using billionaire titles for defending scientific theories.

The article seems to be published in the Journal of High Energy Physics, which is considered seriously by physicists [0]. That title would be a valid response to schlagetown, of course.

It wasn't clear in my comment, but I wasn't addressing the parent's "extraordinary claim" comment, but the "some guy" part.

TBH I didn't get through the article because my BS-meter went off.

It's funny to see how many Hacker News writers use Mac, the most closed hardware+OS, most anti-hackish.

How about renaming HN to stand for Hipster News?

A Mac is the only computer on which you can legally develop for all major operating systems, including mobile.

How is that closed?

Apple puts artificial restrictions on what tools you can use to write iPhone apps, and Macs are that allowed tool, so OS X isn't closed?

That is literally the dumbest argument I've ever read on HN.

Posts like these are why HN can't have nice things anymore.

Java IDE in browser. That's the only thing I need from ChromeOS.

"We can kill 100 percent of the bacteria"

Didn't read further. There's no such thing as "100%" in medicine (even pure alcohol does not). They're not scientists.

It's possible that alcohol kills 100% of the exposed bacteria, but we can't be sure due to measurement limitations, so that's why the bottles will say 99.99%.

That article is ancient, and has drawbacks discussed in other places. Everyone interested has already seen it (its googleable by just "javascript inheritance").

And better music. And better paintings.

Many great people did drugs. But don't mess correlation with causation please. Maybe great people are just more predisposed to drugs, while drugs actually harmed them.
