I've been wondering about building counter ad technology. I think we recall their being some patents I saw sometime in the last handful of years that talked about swapping items out in a live show during reruns. But like why couldn't we just do that on our side and removing the items I assume we just pipe the HDMI in run some algorithms and then pipe it out. And I know I'm saying it as if it's trivial but if someone can write an algorithm to find existing things and swap them out it's the exact same thing except you just swap them out with a patch of the original scene for the original scene without whatever product placement I suppose.

Also just the title of this post reminds me of ready player one (I just watched again recently), we can fill 80% of their field of view with ads before inducing seizures (I forget exact quote but it's close enough)

I went to our state fair recently, and there were so many advertisements for their food that was AI generated, and I suppose if the food looked anything like what was depicted maybe I wouldn't have had a problem, but I felt "tricked" into buying something that appeared good, and turns out, looked nothing like what it was. I overpaid, and didn't even end up eating 1/4 of it. I'm not sure if this quite falls in the same vein as the og post, but it definitely made me feel that way.

I should be fair (no pun intended) there was one booth that had mini donuts that I felt were better than the AI generated poster advertisement, but the rest of the food I ate, was certainly not.

I will say, it was a learning experience, and next time I will just look at what others bought and try to determine if that might be the same as the AI generated images, and whether it looks good enough to order, rather than look at the AI images.

When will having to go through TSA be added?

I've been wanting to get little baggies and put each cable in a different baggie, then have them on a hanging rack thing imagine like at the store when you want to buy a cable, something like that, I suppose sometimes they're on a shelf or whatever but I'm imagine a almost pegboard like situation, then keep them organized by cable and it's like oh lemme go grab a cable from my...store....the only problem is it requires me to actually put them back in a bag, and back on the spot....when I'm done with a given cable and that's a lot to ask for. Lol

The lack of barrier to entry is the problem. That barrier is highly desirable in this context (for better or worse)

Dumb idea, but I wonder if the underlying os can see who is asking questions like do you have root, And if an app has no need to know, it just plays dumb and responds...of course not. It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem, in that if you don't know what apps need to know if you have root, or not, then you can't determine that at the OS level...maybe an option for the user (popup) to tell the program, tell them we are rooted or not? (Or a settings page you can determine what apps can know root or not)

That's exactly how modern Android rooting tools work. You select which apps you want to have root, in a manager app. No other app should be able to notice.

GrapheneOS isn't rooted. The issue is their flawed anti-tampering code shipped a new bug breaking compatibility with secure spawning. We have a per-app toggle for secure spawning due to seeing this with other banking/financial/government apps and it works for PayPal's app as the original poster discovered.

If they want to ban arbitrary operating systems, they can use attestation and it can't be fooled the way you're describing. Apps doing this can explicitly verify GrapheneOS and we've convinced some apps to do that. We've also convinced a smaller number to stop doing that at all.

How does their web site do device attestation? The argument that apps have to be locked behind a validation mechanism controlled by Google to be secure is BS when a cookie is sufficient.

Ok hear me out, if the cost to advertise is low enough, and you can target an audience of 1, could you basically just make ads for yourself that are not really ads? And it's cheaper than a subscription? Sorry randomly thinking out loud here

I've not used it excessively on webpages, the ones I have, I start reading then change my mind and decide to listen, but haven't observed the emoji issue. Then again, maybe I tend to skip over listening to AI generated (or at least overtly obvious?) content. I also have dealt with listening to technical content on PDFs and it sometimes tries to read out x's and o's from a plot, particularly annoying driving ;) guess it hasn't ever bothered me enough to just not use it. I have slowly experimented here and there looking to build a pipeline of text ingest (thinking I could use LLM) to convert certain text (like a plot in my earlier example) into a verbal description, a plot about this thing with emphasis on showing this fact. Or basically hey take this text and make it more digestable by audio, but I haven't experimented a ton.

Ultimately yes garbage in garbage out, but I've found enough value in using it, it's been good enough for me to suggest it's use, and hasn't caused me to search for another variant of tts on phone.

I'll be honest, while it's possible the article is genuine,at some point I felt/realized it seemed like an ad for the book, and made the story feel like it was not genuine and more like a contrived example of why the book is so useful and not real (again, not claiming real vs not real,just the vibe I felt) so I stopped reading.
