maybe its standard for someone who ends up on hackernews, but I'm a 30 something and all of my friends are online people around my age and none of them have ever heard of the HPMoR. The internet is a huge place.
I've had an internet email address since the late 80s, BBSing since the early 80s, pretty active online compared to many people I know who are also software people, especially for my age..

I would second this. I only saw it in passing where someone was rightfully making fun of yud somewhere, but having been in and out of academia in tech for two decades now, I've never heard anyone mention fanfic or yud other than randos on HN threads, and most of the physics people I know, at least the ones familiar with Jaynes and his contemporaries, would almost certainly laugh at a lot of fumbles I occasionally see with people trying to apply "baysenianism".
Ive heard of HPMoR specifically because this exact group has been discussed/entered my periphery before on multiple occasions, Aella goes viral on twitter every couple of weeks (the thing that most cemented her in my mind was the "what counts as rape" survey), and I remember seeing articles of the Zizians when one of the incidents happened. If you have been following the social/political aspects of the tech industry, most of these people should be familiar names.
nothing about this is neobrutalist by their own standards. There is nothing “uncomfortable” about these standard round flat shapes, and unvibrant 3/4 saturated tones, they aren’t distinct, its called Alegria[1], calling it neobrutalism is a corruption of the meaning of brutalism and comes off as distinctly uncultured.
neobrutalism should have sharp edges, very vibrant saturated colors, and virtually none of these flowery spiral shapes. (neo)brutalism is forcing a square peg in a round hole with a hammer, and leaving it like that on purpose, because the raw swedge is the aethetic.

huh. goes to show how much browser selection impacts things. the OMP Qwen result is completely unresponsive in free cam on my iphone, whereas the opencode version is responsive, has multitouch zoom and multitouch pan. the glm models do really well with this as well, but all of the anthropic models have pretty gimped camera controls, even astra, which while pretty wont let me pan and only allows me to rotate about 120 degrees! I’m really impressed with the Qwen 27b OpenCode result.
I suppose the only thing that the prompt asks for is the cinematic view, and honestly they all kinda fail on the “subtle volumetric-style fog planes”, none of them have more fog when you get farther from a light source.
Wouldn’t any software that is a client and relies on a proprietary server to function (like most modern AAA games) be “closed source” under this definition? Not that I agree with this definition of open source btw, just saying that there is precedent.

yeah i'm genuinely baffled by this too. I read this attitude frequently and I'm tending towards the conclusion that its simply a loud minority of people. I don't know anyone who acts like this in real life.
How is an LLM summary really any worse than reading through random blogs, forum posts, or reddit? Those are somehow so much more reliable? If you want authority it gives you links, and if you don't find good enough links you can ask it a follow up--no need to be coy--just straight up ask it for more authoritative sources and it will usually surface them. It's so blazingly fast relative to doing genuine naive search, I really don't see the downside.

For me it's that I find LLM prose annoying to read through, so if it's anything I want to really sit down and learn about, I prefer a proper blog/forum/etc writeup. But yeah, for quick summaries it kinda does just work at this point, fairly reliably and rapidly. I'm pretty confused by the attitude as well.
