For me, it comes down to ease of switching. Most Americans have a single broadband option but there are numerous competitors in each category of content provider, and the latter don't tend to require long contracts.


I sincerely wish people would get as upset about the regional monopolies ISP's have as they do about net neutrality. We have a serious problem the way things are now, and they just want to make it worse by grabbing even more power.


In a way these American ISPs are overplaying their hand. If the situation was one with more choice or even just less rent seeking we wouldn't have such a drastic "what could go wrong" case for net neutrality. So thanks from Europe where the situation isn't nearly as serious and we could end up much worse without this cautionary tale.
